L5PA Statement on Rep. John Lewis' passing.

The Little Five Points Alliance in association with The Little Five Points Business Association, The Little Five Points Community Improvement District, Inman Park and Candler Park Neighborhood Associations, would like to acknowledge and honor the memory of one of our moral leaders, Congressman John Lewis. Civil rights legend, global humanitarian, conscience of the US Congress, vanguard of the progressive social movements and the human rights struggle are just a few of the words associated with Congressman John Lewis's life's work. His passion for humanitarianism ignited while a college student and graduate of Fisk University. His leadership swiftly emerged catapulting him to become the Chairman of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee coordinating over 600 peaceful protests, organizing voter registration drives and spearheading community action programs.  Other titles such as one of the Big Six leaders of civil rights, Director of Voter Education Project, Atlanta City Council Member  and Chief Deputy Whip for the Democratic party as well as being the recipient the highest civilian honor granted by President Obama, the Medal of Freedom, were just a few of his many accomplishments. We trust that his work will continue to catalyze the continuous evolution of the US civil rights movement and support change not just for Georgia, but for humanity. His last and longest role of service as Georgia's 5th District Representative and Congressman began in 1986 until his recent departure from this life at age 80. As we continue to face the impact of the Jim Crow era and other injustices today, we will also benefit from the impact of John Lewis life legacy of protecting human rights and protecting civil liberties and building the  "Beloved community". Our hearts go out to his family and those closest to him, and we send a wish for his spirit to rest in power and peace. John Lewis will live on in our memories and future actions we take.
