Supporting those in Need
Last week the City of Atlanta learned some very disturbing news. During a clearing of a homeless encampment by the Department of Public Works, Cornelius Taylor, a homeless man, suffered life-threatening injuries and later passed away at Grady Hospital.
This tragedy has spurred renewed conversations about how to help those who are unhoused in Atlanta as the problem continues to grow in our communities. As many of you know, the L5P Alliance has worked with multiple strategies to help with this issue in our district.
Over the past year, the L5P Alliance has:
partnered with the Gateway Center to have a case worker visit L5P weekly
hired Georgia Works, a nonprofit supporting unhoused men by providing jobs through community clean-ups
supported the L5P Business Association to have off-duty Atlanta Police Officers conduct additional patrols
While all of these efforts combined have been helpful, it's clear that individuals struggling with homelessness need a greater level of support. In 2025, the L5P Alliance hopes to work with Intown Cares to have a regular case worker in the community building relationships and helping individuals find safe places to live.
Earlier this week City Council passed legislation around expanding the successful Intown Cares East Atlanta pilot to more communties, and we are currently working with Councilmembers Amir Farokhi and Liliana Bakhtiari to make it happen. We will continue to keep our community updated about this new investment in L5P.
